Single Mothers Can Find College Grants
By: Lana Hawkins
Single mothers have enough to worry about. Aside from the numerous expenses that come along with going to college including tuition, books and other related expenses. Financial pressure can be relieved by a grant. There are college grants available for single mothers, which is money that is provided to you from an institution or organization, that can assist in paying for your tuition or extra expenses and you do not have to repay the money either. A grant is not recognized as any type of loan. This refers to a certain amount of money provided to you for a specified reason. After your tuition and other expenses are covered, you are able to use the remaining funds for what you want.
When you accept a student loan, paying it back is a requirement. Six months after your graduation date you have to start paying on any education loans you have taken out over your college career. If you are a single mother, this may not be the best choice for you. It is possible to go from your academic studies into your full time career with no debt at all, if you are able to get a college grant.
You can apply for a grant in a number of ways including; going to your financial aid office, talking to a financial aid officer or by going on the Internet and finding out what grants are available to you there. Available local grants to help pay for college will be discussed with you by your financial officer. Each grant could have special admissions requirements. The ones that are sponsored by the federal government are intended for those with low incomes or the unemployed. The grant is somewhat flexible and can be adjusted according to your specific economic need. You can also get financial support by the state you live in as long as you present certain qualifications, related to your income and your academic carreer. You must demonstrate that your grades are good and that you will complete your course of study on time.
When searching for a grant online do not choose any companies that ask for money upfront. A grant is supposed to award you with money not to take the money you already have. Search for grants on the Internet using specific search terms. When you do an Internet search for grants make sure to look at the second search page and beyond. It would be better to avoid the more popular grants and apply for the little known, hidden ones that don't have as many applicants. There are grants available for various categories. Specific grants are available for sexual orientation or for ethnic background. You can also find grants for religious affiliations. Some grants are even available to those with qualifying political affiliations.
Single moms can sometimes be given leniency during the application process. Single parents have a variety of grants available to them, and a single mom has a better chance of getting one if she applies. As a female, odds are in your favor of getting a grant or scholarship. The fact that you are a single parents proves that you are in financial need. Apply for many different grants; if one doesn't accept you the next one might.
