Using Colors in Color Offset Printing

There are two color schemes that are predominantly used in the printing industry – the RGB and CMYK color spaces. The important thing here is to know both of these terms mean and know when to use them. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. These four colors are combined in varying degrees to create colors using inks.

Due to the differences in the way these two color schemes produce colors, you cannot interchange the use of these color schemes. For example, you cannot use the RGB color space when you are printing. This will result in your prints having a different color from the one that you see on your screen. This is why professional commercial printers usually test you files first before printing your materials. They make sure that your files are in their proper color spaces so that color accuracy is preserved.

Speaking of color accuracy, you may once in a while notice that there is subtle difference in the colors that you see in your computer monitor and the prints that were delivered to your home. At worst, you can probable notice a considerable difference between the design colors and the actual colors. This is partly because of the difference in the color schemes used in your monitors and the colors schemes used when printing. With the current technology available, there is no way of knowing how your colors will turn out when printing and you will not find a printer that will guarantee a 100% color accuracy in its prints. the best thing that you can do is to request for actual proofs rather than settle for digital proofs that are sent to you through e-mail. Remember that digital proofs are also viewed through the computer monitors that you have and that you still have no accurate representation on the print products that you will be getting.

Having actual proofs will help you in knowing the quality of the colors being printed by your printing company of choice. Because actual proofs give you a tangible opportunity to see for your self the actual product that you will be producing. More than that, you can also check out the materials they use and evaluate for yourself if the printer is up to par with your standards.
