War Against Spam - 02/07/2006 |
| By: Novice Investing Staff |
| On Monday February 6th 2006, two of the biggest email account providers, Yahoo! Inc. and American Online will introduce service that will charge email senders for sending multiple emails. In return, these email providers will ensure that paid emails will reach the recipient's inbox, instead of the junk mail filters. | |
| Spamming has been a constant problem for email users. Jupiter Research reported that average email users received 3253 unwanted emails or spam in 2005. That is about 10 mails per day. In the United States alone, there are around 225 Million internet users. Under the new Yahoo! & AOL program, spammers will have to pay $ 22. 5 Million daily or $ 8.21 Billion a year. Will this reduce spams? Absolutely. Will there be complaints from email senders? Absolutely. | |
| If you were regular email users sending to less than ten recipients per mail, there should be no change to the way you send emails. If you like to send email to a hundred people simultaneously, it will cost you $ 1 under the new plan. It does not cost regular email users much and yet, if you are sending unwanted emails to literally millions of email address simultaneously, it will cost you quite a fortune. Therefore, in our opinion, this plan will in fact deter unwanted emails. | |
| Of course, we should not forget the fact that both Yahoo! and AOL are merely trying to make some money out of their email programs. But hey, if it helps spam, we should not complain when they make 1 cents a piece for delivering mass emails to the recipient's inbox. While it will not eliminate spam entirely, this is a step in the right direction. Let's charge them one pretty penny. | |
