What Can Google Finance Do ? - 02/25/2006

By: Hari Wibowo
A lot of buzz had it that Google Inc. (GOOG) is about to launch its own finance network very soon. Thestreet.com reported that Search Engine Journal Editor, Loren Baker, had been contemplating of this move by Google based on various evidence. This will put Google with direct competition with the widely-popular Yahoo! Finance which attracts 9.9 million visitors on January of 2006.

Personally, I am using Yahoo! Finance quite regularly. The reason? There is no other sites giving the simplicity of finding stock information online as well as Yahoo! Finance. With two clicks, you can get an overlay of stock information. Other financial sites are displaying news result on their front page without thinking of what surfers want to find.

Some speculated that the move fits Google's mission of organizing and giving access to the world's information but I believe that is not Google's main reason. The main reason is to gain traffics. Anyone knows that traffic is the lifeblood of any site, regardless of whether it is relevant or not. By building up traffic, Google in essence is trying to gain more revenue by attracting more visitors to its site.

You may ask, why now? The reason is the amount of traffic Google can get. Look at this "Where Yahoo's Users go" from Alexa and you will see why:
  • mail.yahoo.com - 53%
  • search.yahoo.com - 8%
  • news.yahoo.com - 3%
  • login.yahoo.com - 3%
  • yahoo.com - 2%
  • bid.yahoo.com - 2%
  • finance.yahoo.com - 2%
  • sports.yahoo.com - 1%
  • groups.yahoo.com - 1%
  • store.yahoo.com - 1%
  • kids.yahoo.com - 1%
  • auctions.yahoo.com - 1%
  • my.yahoo.com - 1%
  • messages.yahoo.com - 1%
  • personals.yahoo.com - 1%
If you remember, Google was releasing its G-mail beta first before all the other products. This is to capture the huge 53% potential Yahoo! users. It then went on to introduce Google News and recently Google Base ( a form of auction site). Scrolling down the list, you will see that finance.yahoo.com is right there right after Yahoo! Bid. Therefore, if I were to predict, Google will be releasing its own sport news site after this.

All this is just a rumor and it will be interesting to watch. I love my Yahoo! Finance and Google has a habit of exceeding existing products/services by a wide margin. Let's see what features it will offer on its upcoming Google Finance.
