Google Finance In Action  - 03/22/2006

By: Novice Investing Staff
In a bid to organize every information imaginable to users, Google has finally released its Google Finance website to web surfers worldwide. While it covers mostly US based stocks information, we believe that eventually it will display all sorts of information regarding investing worldwide. The site will compete directly to the widely popular Yahoo! Finance.

At a glance, Google Finance looks very similar to Yahoo! Finance, offering financial news, stock quotes, history etc. Some nice additional feature includes java charts which enable users the option to look at 5-year chart as well as 5 day chart, all without reloading your browser.

Can Google Finance rival Yahoo! Finance? Definitely. But, it needs a lot of catching up to do for a while. No, Yahoo! Finance does not have better features. But the truth is, Yahoo! Finance has been around for as long as we can remember. It is hard to switch people to Google Finance initially. In the long run, if Google can come up with new better features, eventually people will switch. Similar things  happen with Gmail and Yahoo! mail. Even if Gmail has a better feature, people will stick to Yahoo! mail due to their familiarity with the the features. No. Both Yahoo! and Gmail still co-exists. In the long run, email program with the best feature will win and the others will die. But, it has not happened thus far.

Therefore, the conclusion is while Google Finance has additional features that Yahoo! Finance lack, it won't displace Yahoo! Finance overnight. Furthermore, it is pretty certain that Yahoo! will fight back with a better offering on its own down the road. Only time will well who will win.
