The Microsoft-Novell deal makes us look at this company once again. Novell Inc. (NOVL) has always play second fiddle to open source leaders Red Hat Inc. (RHAT). While Novell reported higher revenue for the year, its profit margin leave too much to be said. Novell viewed the Microsoft deal as an endorsement and tout it on its website. If you are a little interested in investing in Novell, looking at its business line is crucial. This article will glance at Novell's 2005 annual report.

Novell allows various applications of open source for companies. It divides its offerings into five segments; Data center solutions, Security and Identity Solutions, Resource Management solutions, Workgroup solutions and Desktop solutions. Data center solutions indulge in operating hardware such as servers, customer services and unused capacities. By using Novell's data center solutions, customer can save their IT infrastructure cost and being an open source, Novell can offer the technology far cheaper than existing products.

Security and Identity solutions refer to the way open source simplifies access, centrally managing policies, giving new employees instant login and automating routine process. All these are done without compromising the safety aspect of a network. With Novell's security and identity solutions, customer anywhere in the world can access into the company's intra network quickly, easily and securely.

Resource management solutions will help customers to upgrade and maintain their servers simultaneously and efficiently. Novell's resource management solutions will enable customers to automate everything from policy and security environment to operating-system migration. This will reduce IT effort, control costs, and achieve higher return on investment for their IT expenditures.

Workgroup Solutions refer to the infrastructure, services and tool information a customer needs to stay connected and do their jobs effectively. Scalability is also another functional tools for this workgroup solutions. As network grows, customer does not have to add more staff

Desktop Solutions enable customers to have a flexible operating systems with a wide variety of inexpensive hardware that protects systems against viruses, spyware and provides a low cost alternative to windows.

To be honest, Novell does not say much on its annual report. Yes, of course, it is hundreds of pages thick. But it mainly talks about its financial statement, which you can easily obtained at Yahoo! Finance.
